Cheers to you, 2012!

Were our visit to Starbucks in Basel, Switzerland this afternoon
& my beverage
{cranberry white chocolate mocha}
two of the best things about 2011?

Hmmm... let me think for a bit... yep!

Hope you have had lots of yummy beverages & a wonderful 2011.

À l'année prochaine ! {See you next year!}

Christmas Charm {2}

As I mentioned in my post the other day, le 24 décembre au soir
is the most important moment in France for Christmas celebrations.

As you can see by the photos, la table chez mes beaux-parents
{the table at my in-laws' house}
was set with care & the entire French family was there!

C'est très beau, n'est-ce pas ?

But you know what the most impressive thing on the table was?
Le dessert !

{OK, OK... you can tease me about my sweet tooth if you like.
Yes, my favourite part of any meal is almost always the dessert...}

But can you blame me??!

Remember les petit fours that I posted about the other day?
Or those yummy cookies that came from the little town
we spent our vacation in Brittany in?
Not to mention those meringues I posted about way back when?

Well, all that was beyond delicious.  And pretty.

But... you really have to admire my mother-in-law's homemade
bûche de Noël.

You see,  bûche = log.
It's the shape of the traditional Christmas cake in France.
{Need to know more?  You can read this article.}

Need to hurry up & finish reading this blog entry
so that you can go bake something sweet?

OK, here are the photos of what ma belle-mère baked...

Bravo !!!
{and miam miam aussi...}

E & me {Christmas cousins}

Christmas Charm {1}

Hello!  Bonjour !

I have lots of seasonal wishes for you, dear Rue de France reader!!

First off, happy three-days-after-Christmas-Eve!
{Which, in France, involves a huge family dinner that is pretty much
the most important moment of Christmas celebrations!}

Secondly, happy two-days-after-December-25th!
{Which is when I felt the most homesick,
especially in the morning.
In France it's a day that is much more low-key than in Canada
so I had less distractions & festivities
& spent a good part of the day missing my family... le sigh...}

Lastly, happy one-day-after-Boxing-Day!
{Which doesn't exist in France.
So my December 26th involved sleeping in,
eating festive leftovers with my in-laws,
taking a nap & having a little wander - in the very brisk air -
around FQ's lovely little village-slash-hometown, Pommiers.}

*************
Et maintenant ?

How about a photo of festive French food?

One of the family meals we had was at FQ's aunt's house.
The meal had about a zillion courses & was amazing, of course.
{But I'd need an entirely separate post to tell you all about that.}

So let's just stick with what she served for dessert, ok?

Les petit fours.

Beautiful + delicate + delicious?  Mais oui !
But pumpkin pie, one of my favourite things ever?  Mais non...

{Again, le sigh...
But at least I've passed along lots of greetings to you all,
I've told you a little about Christmas traditions in France
& I've made your mouth water with that photo!}

More tomorrow, ok?
{Including a post-Christmas version of the world-famous E & me...}

E & me {Christmas collage}

Christmas is just around the corner!

So this week's E & me features a Christmas collage.

Trees, decorations, wrapping paper...

They're chez nous here in les Alpes.
They're also chez Erin allllll the way over in Victoria.

Any ideas which pictures belong to which location?

{Pssst!  Santa might be extra nice to you this year
if you leave a guess or two in the comments...}

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow...

Weekend recap:

1.  It snowed.  A lot.
2.  It made me feel très très très festive.
3.  I took a million photos of the snowfall from our balcony.
4.  Yes, I'm that geeky.
5.  But a picture is worth a thousand words, right?

So let me ask you this...
What are five photos of a zillion snowflakes worth?
Hmm..???

E & me {Christmas window displays}

Ten more days left to finish {start?!} your Christmas shopping...

For this week's E & me,
Erin & I took a few minutes to window shop close to home.

As you can see,
there's a classic Nutcracker/chocolate theme going on
& a more modern rockin' around the Christmas tree display.

Any guesses which one is in Victoria & which one is here in Annecy?

Love? This way...

Just a detail from the the middle of the big
rond-point {= roundabout/traffic circle}
up the street from chez nous.

It is filled with lovely Christmas decorations at the moment.
Would you like to see more?

Bonjour, la neige !

Remember at the beginning of the month
to believe December had arrived
& that Christmas was just around the corner?

Well... most of last week,
 it was horribly cold, rainy & windy in Annecy.

Ugh.

Even though I'm from Vancouver
{on Canada's "Wet Coast"},
that kind of weather makes me want to stay on the couch all day.

But you know what?

Whenever I needed to go out over the past few days,
I bundled up,
pulled on my gumboots
& tried {sans succès}
to use my umbrella to avoid getting soaked.

{That didn't work, of course...}

So...
I kept reminding myself how
nasty weather en ville
snow snow snow en montagne.

And I was right!
Please behold the proof in these photos taken from my balcony!
{Now that it's stopped pouring, we can enjoy our view again, yay!}

C'est trop beau, non ??!

E & me {light trees}

is continuing the Christmas decoration theme.

It's all about arbres = trees.
Although you know what's strange?

Erin lives on the West Coast of Canada,
where there are zillions of evergreen trees.

Et moi ? J'habite dans les Alpes.
It's not as if there are no forests nearby.

Yet, as you can see from the photos above,
people in both Victoria & Annecy think it's cool
to make a "tree" out of lights.

Hmm.
I'm not convinced.
Et toi ?

Il fait trop chaud pour un chocolat chaud !

Happy December!

You know what?

It was super difficile
to believe that it was the first day of December today.

The weather this afternoon in Annecy
was gorgeous & practically warm.
I'm serious.

The sun was beating down!
Some people were sitting outside cafés,
 drinking beverages in their t-shirts.
Honestly!

C'est bizarre pour le mois de décembre, non ??!

As for me,
I chose to celebrate the beginning of December
by ducking into one of my favorite tea-rooms in town,
the lovely & classy Fidèle Berger.

Their chocolat chaud ?
Amazing.
{Even on a practically hot December first...}

E & me {start of Christmas decorations in town}

C'est décembre demain !

Since it's December tomorrow, E & me this week is all about
the beginning of the local Christmas decorations in town.

Scenic, pretty, festive...
It's just the beginning of a month-long E & me theme
don't you think, Erin?

One month till Christmas...

No wonder the crêpe guy downtown is already in full-on Noël mode!

E & me {bike lane}

Remember how both Erin & I were très busy last week?

Well, it's already the middle of a new week
we're back in business for E & me today.

Now if only there were time to go for a bike ride...

Bottomless week (but not soft drinks...)

TGIF!
(Normally I hate that expression,
but today I have to admit I'm almost happy to use it...)

As my lovely Erin has mentioned over on her blog,
it's been quite the hectic week for her.
Pour moi aussi!
We didn't even get to do our weekly Canada vs France feature,
E & me.
Le sigh.
But we'll be back at that next week...

 In the meantime, I thought of something culturally funny
I saw at one of the Subway restaurants
here in Annecy recently & wanted to share avec vous:

"Thanks for only serving yourself once"
Ah well... CHEERS to le week-end anyway!!
See you back here soon...

Les (Cheesy) Scènes du Week-end {30}

Last weekend we celebrated my husband's birthday.
The festivities involved LOTS of cheese.

We had family lunch at a lovely local farm
where they serve meals made with their delicious fromage.

And for dessert? We had home-made cheesecake
I'd love to tell you more & post additional photos,
but I'm still digesting all that cheese!
Miam miam... & more soon!

E & me {town clock}

Tick tock, tick tock!
This week's E & me is all about town clocks
{& time differences... le sigh...}
You can see in Erin's photo that it's nearly 2 p.m. in Victoria.
That would be a good time for she & I to wrap up a long lunch, huh?
{Only problem is that it would be 11 p.m. here, so bedtime...}

As for 4 p.m. ici à Annecy ?
That would be the perfect moment for us two girls to get together
at my favourite café {just next to the lovely clock tower!}
to talk about our day, catch up on the gossip &
drink tea & eat macarons.
{But it would only be 7 a.m. in Victoria... a little early, non ?}

So...
Both town clocks in the above photo are lovely.
My friendship with Erin is fabulous.

But the 9 hour time difference
between Canada's West Coast & France?
I'm not always a fan.

C'est possible que j'adore le jaune...

As I've mentioned before,
yellow has never really been my favourite colour.

But when I saw it in Budapest, I was quite impressed.
And like I said the other day, I love autumn.

So today's photos?
Lovely feuilles jaunes {= yellow leaves}
that I swooned over on the street near my house.

Finalement c'est possible que j'adore le jaune !

Les Scènes du Week-end {29}

This weekend we took it easy & didn't go very far from home.
But there were some lovely things to see just down the street.

There was a local apple/pear/honey festival
we checked out on Saturday afternoon.
there were great prices on apples & pears grown in orchards just outside Annecy
& lots of yummy local juice too
as you can see, some pumpkins & squash snuck into the festival
& a local jam-maker too

{We didn't buy any jam, seeing as
my husband is an expert de confiture,
so we have tons of jars chez nous...}

Sunday morning it was foggy,
so the mountains we can usually admire from our balcony
were mostly hidden.

However, that didn't stop me from admiring
the colour of all the local trees.
Have I mentioned I love autumn?

view of the neighbours' pretty fall colours from notre balcon
FQ made a huge batch of delicious pumpkin soup
& also gingerbread cake for dessert.
Miam !!!

I love soup almost as much as I love autumn
After lunch, we went down to le lac for a wander in the fresh air.

oooh, pretty
J'adore voir les feuilles dans le lac...

more pretty fall trees outside of Annecy's fancy lake-front hotel/casino
But really... let's be honest, ok?

Local fruit festival? Fun.
Husband who makes soup & cake?  Nice.
Lake & lovely leaves just down the street?  Pretty.

But the best thing about this past weekend?
My new iPhone started working!!!
Whee!!!!!!!
Canuck case?  I love it more than autumn & ALMOST as much as the iPhone!

E & me {Jack O'Lanterns}

Halloween is a few days behind us,
but Erin & I figured we could feature our Jack O'Lanterns
on E & me this week.

Last week we talked about our Halloween decorations at home.
But this week, let's admire our résultats artistiques...

The Jack O'Lantern on the left was one of 4 (!!!) carved by Erin's sons.
On the right was what I did with my niece, Juliette last weekend.
I have to admit that I was impressed by her design.

Star-shaped lid?  Classy.
Four eyes?  Wow.
Rotten teeth & bloody mouth?  Ooof!
Halloween-themed paper parasols stuck in the lid?  Festive!
{So, merci Erin for sending me those... Juliette was thrilled!}

Joyeux Anniversaire Juliette !

Happy birthday to ma nièce Juliette !

Chocolate cake + extra decoration
{pink hearts piped on with sparkly frosting
+ Halloween-themed drink umbrella}
=
un gâteau just as cool as my niece.

Les Scènes du Week-end {28}

It was a busy, fun & festive weekend.

Saturday FQ & I headed to Lyon
for some shopping & Starbucks {hooray!}
before spending the evening chez ses parents à Pommiers.

Sunday I was in full-on Jack O'Lantern mode
with my lovely niece.

Ready for the pumpkin/decoration/costume photos?

On y va ! {= Here we go!}

FQ on le métro à Lyon
moi & my {rare, so very exciting} chai tea latte
my niece's Jack O'Lantern plan
her uncle cutting open la citrouille
scoop scoop scoop
draw draw draw
et voila !!!
eeeek !
my nephew Martin = cutest devil ever
festive/creepy lunch-time table décor

So boo boo boo &
Happy Halloween to all of you!
